Almost all the characters on your keyboard will display on a web page; however, some characters cannot be displayed by simply typing that character into your HTML source code. An example of this is the less than and greater than symbols. Those characters are used within the HTML source to define markup tags; therefore, simply typing the symbol is not enough to display the character. |
There are also some characters that you might want to display that are not on your keyboard. Some examples of this might be an at sign (@), English Pound currency symbol (£), and maybe even a Japanese Yen currency symbol (¥). Another reason for using the HTML extended character set is email encoding. By using the decimal equivalent of each character in the email address instead of the actual keyboard character, you can fool the email address harvester programs that collect email addresses for the purpose of SPAM. The harvester/SPAM program either does not recognize the email address as being an email address, or cannot read the HTML code. In either case, the email address is ignored and posting the email address on your web page does not result in unwanted email sent to the address.
